Assam: On Wednesday, Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highway announced that Rs. 996.75 Cr has been approved for Rail-cum-Road Bridge across the Brahmaputra river. The project across the Brahmaputra river near the existing Saraighat bridge at Guwahati has been approved at the cost of Rs. 996.75 Crore which will be shared by NHAI & Ministry of Railways. Also, the cost of approaches/viaducts: Rs. 322 Cr. will be entirely built by NHAI.

On the other hand, The bridge would connect the north bank of Assam to the south bank i. e. Guwahati across Brahmaputra river. Once the bridge is completed, it would provide seamless & strategic connectivity across the river with heavy traffic at present of more than 75000 PCUs.

Meanwhile, The Railway Ministry, Road Transport Ministry, and Border Road Organisation (BRO) are planning to build the country’s first underwater road-cum-rail tunnels across the Brahmaputra river in Assam at a cost of Rs 7,000 crore. The underwater tunnel project will be an incredible feat, significantly lowering travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh and benefiting the country strategically.

The tunnels will be 9.8 kilometers long each, and this will be the first project to use integrated tunnel construction. In the event of an emergency, these tunnels will be linked by a cross passage.
In 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the country’s longest rail-cum-road bridge over the Brahmaputra river at Bogibeel near Dibrugarh in Assam.
It is indeed an honour to have inaugurated the Bogibeel Bridge on Atal Ji’s Jayanti.

The Bogibeel Bridge, which was approved as part of the Assam Accord in 1997-98, is also expected to play an important role in defense movement along the India-China border in Arunachal Pradesh.
