India’s next presidential election will be held on July 18. This was announced by the Election Commission of India on Thursday. The commission further said counting of votes will be held on July 21, if required.
India’s current President Ram Nath Kovind’s term ends on July 24. The BJP had elected then Bihar governor Ram Nath Kovind for the highest post in the country in 2017. It may be recalled that the new President will be sworn in on July 25.
The president is elected by the votes cast by the Electoral College, consisting of 776 members of Parliament (members of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha combined) and 4,033 members of the legislative assemblies, with a total of 4,809 votes being cast.
