An Enforcement Directorate (ED) team was attacked while investigating a TMC leader’s residence in relation to a suspected ration scam. According to officials, the attack occurred while the agency officials were investigating the residences of two block-level leaders in North 24 Parganas, Shankar Adhya and Shahjahan Sheikh, as well as their families, on Friday morning.
When hundreds of locals overpowered the ED officials and a few members of the central forces, they were conducting raids on the residence of local Trinamool leader Shahjahan Sheikh. When the mob grew violent, the ED team was attempting to unlock the gates of the local Trinamool leader’s residence. In relation to the abnormalities in the public distribution system, the ED began conducting searches. In relation to the scam from the previous year, the Enforcement Department detained State Minister Jyoti Priya Mallick.
Several of the central forces’ vehicles were destroyed and the team’s officers suffered injuries. Not even the members of the media who accompanied the ED team were spared. Numerous journalists were assaulted, causing damage to their cameras and other gear. Sandeshkhali was taken by ED officers, jawans of the central security forces, and media personnel. The crowd that criticised ED representatives and media representatives claimed to be Mr. Sheikh’s supporters while yelling anti-ED slogans. The media people’s car was once used by the ED officers in an attempt to escape, but it was stopped and attacked.
The attack evoked sharp reactions from the Opposition. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said that the law and order situation in the State was in shambles.
