In Budget 2023, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed basic customs and excise duty cuts on a variety of products, including mobile phone and television parts. To encourage value-added manufacturing in India, duty reductions on toys and bicycles have been announced, as well as a relaxation of the indirect tax regime. “As a result of the government’s various initiatives, including phased manufacturing programmes, mobile production in India increased from 5.8 crore units valued at Rs 18,900 crore in 2014-15 to 31 crore units valued at Rs 2,75,000 crore in the last fiscal year,” said Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Customs duty relief for certain inputs for camera lens, lithium batteries to continue for another year.

While the GST Council is primarily responsible for tobacco taxation, the central government also imposes a National Calamity Contingent Duty (NCCD) on cigarettes, which is subject to change in the Budget.

The magnitude of the increase will be critical for cigarette manufacturers, particularly ITC NSE 1.84%, because cigarettes account for more than 80% of the company’s net profit and approximately 45% of its topline.

 

In her Union Budget speech on February 1, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a five-year research grant to one of the IITs to encourage indigenous production of lab-grown diamonds.

“Lab-grown diamonds are a technology and innovation-driven energy-driven sector with high employment potential,” according to the FM.
