Mrinal Deka’s short film ‘Beep’ has got selected in the prestigious Kolkata International Film Festival, marking it as a notable representation for Assam on the international stage.
The Information and Cultural Affairs Department of the Government of West Bengal, organises the event, and the Kolkata International Film Festival is renowned for its global cinematic celebration.
From December 5th to December 12th, the 29th edition of the Indian Panorama section at the Kolkata International Film Festival featured approximately 1,000 short films from various states. Among them, only 12 films were officially selected for the competitive short film category, representing different regions across India. The Assamese short film ‘Beep’, presented by Firefly Films, is the sole entry from Assam in this competition and has gained official recognition as part of the festival’s celebrations.
Mrinal Deka, a young filmmaker from Assam, has been making steady progress in the field of filmmaking, with a particular focus on directing and editing. Following his experience as an assistant director in both Assam and Mumbai, working under different talented directors, Mrinal Deka marked his directorial debut with the Assamese short film titled “Mongoh Dohar Gundh.”
“Mongoh Dohar Gundh” has been honoured at various film festivals, including the 10th International Guwahati Film Festival in 2021(3rd Best Short Film) and the 11th Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival in 2021(Best Jury Special Award).
Additionally, Mrinal Deka was honored with the Best Director Award at the 6th Roshani International Film Festival. Furthermore, the film received the Best Jury Special Award at the Tagore International Film Festival in Kolkata. Moreover, it achieved official selection status at festivals in Pune, Jaipur, and Kerala, solidifying its widespread success in diverse cinematic forums.
Mrinal Deka is contributing captivating short films and web series to Assamese cinema, with notable popularity gained by the two web series, “Soulmate” and “Hostel 9”.
