Following the conclusion of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) convention nearly ten days ago, it has been reported that over 300 former leaders of the student body, including ousted leader Dibya Jyoti Medhi, have confirmed their decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Sources indicate that a group of former AASU leaders and workers, headed by the expelled leader, held a meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday night in Guwahati to officially declare their allegiance to the party.

In his statement to the press, Dibya Jyoti Medhi expressed, “AASU operates as a monarchy with a lack of democracy within the organization. Certain members of the students’ union hold advisory roles, while authentic students do not reap any advantages from the leadership of AASU. I believe it revolves around engaging in active politics to meet the aspirations of the people.”

“I believe that after reaching a certain age, it is appropriate to step down from AASU. Discussions are underway with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Previously, I operated under AASU’s leadership, and now I will align with the guidance of the party leadership” he added.

“Both our group and the younger generation are inspired by the chief minister’s developmental initiatives, and as a result, we find ourselves more inclined towards the BJP,” he further added.
