Magh Bihu 2023: The most wonderful time of the year has arrived. This is the time of year when people all over the country celebrate. The harvest festival is celebrated throughout the country under various names. The harvest festival, known as Pongal in Tamil Nadu and Lohri in Punjab, is known as Magh Bihu in Assam and the north-eastern part of India. People dress up in new clothes and spend the day with their loved ones. Magh Bihu marks the end of harvest season and the beginning of the month of Magh. According to the Assamese traditional calendar, Magh Bihu will be celebrated this year on January 15.

People gather with their friends and family to celebrate the new harvest, participate in traditional activities, prepare traditional Assamese food and sweets, and build temporary huts, which are then burned as a symbol of the end of the old and the beginning of the new. The festival has both agricultural and social significance, as it is a time to renew friendship and brotherhood ties, as well as bring young men and women together.

Magh Bihu 2023 Significance:

The first day of Magh Bihu, which is celebrated over two days, is known as Uruka or Bihu eve. On this day, young people, mostly men, go to the fields and build improvised huts known as Bhelaghar. These houses are built with bamboo, leaves, and thatch. A Meji, or campfire, is another necessary component of Magh Bihu.

A bonfire is lit early on Bihu morning, and the gods are prayed to. On Uruka night, people prepare meals and spend the night dancing and singing around the Meji. The following day is the main Magh Bihu. On this day, people take a bath early in the morning and burn the Meji.

Tekeli bhonga (pot-breaking) and buffalo fighting, two traditional Assamese games, are also part of the festivities. Cock fights and egg fights are also popular. Rice cakes, the festival’s main attraction, are distributed to all attendees. Among the other delicacies are numerous varieties of rice cakes. Til (sesame), narikol (coconut), tekeli, ghila, and sunga pithas are the names for these. Laru, a coconut-based sweet, is also manufactured. Laddoo is also made with sesame, coconut, and murmura, or puffed rice.
