The former editor of the local newspaper ‘Dainik Asom’ passed away at the age of 84 in Guwahati on Tuesday evening.
Sources indicate that Baruah was hospitalised in Nemcare Hospital, Guwahati on Monday night for age-related ailments and was pronounced dead at approximately 6:50 pm on Tuesday.
Born in 1939, the seasoned journalist received numerous honorary awards, including the Republic Day Journalism Award presented by the State Government.
Having joined the local newspaper in 1966, Baruah concluded his tenure as the Editor in 2001.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed condolences, describing the journalist’s passing as an irreplaceable loss to both the media and the social sector of the state.
The chief minister expressed sorrow over the demise of the distinguished journalist, editor, and writer Anil Baruah. Describing Baruah as a socially conscious and courageous journalist, the chief minister lamented the irreparable loss to the state’s media and social sector. He offered prayers for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed heartfelt condolences to the grieving family in a post on X.
