Nearly 350 households that were displaced in an eviction effort in November 2021 are currently residing in the rehabilitation camp in Assam’s Hojai district.
“This is inhumanity of the highest order,” Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Sandeep Mehta told Assam government lawyer D Nath.
“How long can you keep people like cattle in tarpaulin temporary shelters?” the Gauhati high court chief justice asked the Assam government attorney.
The chief justice of the Gauhati High Court issued these remarks based on a report presented by senior attorney BD Konwar.
On the orders of the Gauhati High Court, Konwar visited the rehabilitation camp in Assam’s Hojai district on April 20.
The Gauhati high court further ordered the Assam government to give portable water supplies to the shelter homes immediately.
According to Advocate BD Konwar’s assessment, there is a shortage of sufficient drinking water facilities in the rehabilitation camp in Assam’s Hojai district.
He has sent a complete inspection report that he prepared. According to the senior advocate’s assessment, there is a shortage of basic drinking water facilities in the camp. As a result, a fully filtered water supply is required in the camp as an instant remedy.
