In a notable step towards enhancing safety in Assam, Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh recently disclosed positive advancements in the state’s continuous efforts to combat crime. The Eleventh monthly crime review, held at Assam Police Headquarters on December 21st, underscored significant progress achieved since the inception of monthly state crime reviews in February.

DGP GP Singh expressed satisfaction with the advancements in addressing criminal activities. While acknowledging the ongoing efforts required to enhance policing response and outcomes, the DGP’s statement presented encouraging statistics for the year 2023. The crime rate per lakh population has notably decreased, reaching 184—an improvement from previous years. Additionally, the conviction rate, a key measure of justice system efficiency, has seen a commendable increase to 16.42%.

Analyzing the crime rate per lakh population over the last five years reveals a favorable pattern. In 2019, the rate was 387, declining to 350 in 2020 and experiencing a slight increase to 380 in 2021. Notably, 2022 witnessed a significant decrease to 194, and this positive trajectory continued into 2023 (up to November) with a further reduction to 186. These statistics highlight the successful measures implemented by Assam Police in mitigating criminal activities.

Examining the yearly total of registered cases offers further insight. In 2019, there were 132,877 cases, followed by 121,609 in 2020 with a slight uptick to 133,239 in 2021. Notably, 2022 saw a substantial decrease to 68,282 cases, and by November 2023, there was a further decline to 60,833. These figures not only signify a reduction in the overall crime rate but also indicate a more effective management of cases by the authorities.

The conviction rate, a crucial indicator of the justice system’s efficiency, has demonstrated a steady upward trend. Starting at 5.9% in 2018, it increased to 6.7% in 2019, then decreased to 5.4% in 2020, with a slight rise to 5.6% in 2021. Notably, 2022 experienced a substantial jump to 13.5%, and this positive trend persisted in 2023 (up to November) with an impressive 16.42%.
