The Excise Department of Assam is implementing stringent measures to curb traffic law violations and the nuisance of public drinking, including hefty fines and potential imprisonment. Those caught drinking alcohol in public places, including roadside locations, moving vehicles, and parked cars, will face a fine of Rs 5,000. Additionally, creating a nuisance in public spaces could lead to a three-month jail term and a Rs 10,000 fine.
Under Section 61(b) of the Assam Excise Act, the Excise Department is actively enforcing these regulations. Offenders will not only incur fines but also have their records documented. Moreover, if caught again, individuals face the prospect of even stricter penalties.
The crackdown extends beyond public spaces to include individuals found drinking inside parked vehicles. Furthermore, if the driver of the vehicle is intoxicated, they can be booked under the Motor Vehicle Act of 1988.
