The Assam Government has taken a substantial step to maintain financial discipline and integrity among its administrative officials. In a significant move, the Assam Government has suspended eight Block Development Officers (BDOs) across various districts, citing unauthorized withdrawal of government funds.

The list of suspended officials includes Abinash Taye from Silchar Development Block in Cachar district, Dwijen Kumar Bora from Jorhat East Development Block in Jorhat district, Bornali Phukan from Kakopathar Development Block in Tinsukia district, Gautam Kr. Sarmah from Sakomatha Development Block in Biswanath district, Palak Kumar Sarmah from Sootea Development Block in Biswanath district, Hema Kanta Borah from Gabhoru Development Block in Sonitpur district, Arun Kumar Das from Chaiduar Development Block in Biswanath district, and Rashmi Rekha Mahanta from Biswanath Development Block in Biswanath district have all been suspended.

The Panchayat and Rural Development Department took the lead in initiating disciplinary measures by issuing individual suspension orders on Friday. The department strongly denounced the unauthorized fund withdrawals, considering them a significant violation of financial regulations and a direct affront to the state’s authority.

In contravention of Rule 3 of the Assam Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1965, the violation specifically pertained to the allocation of funds for compensating contractual staff under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). Importantly, the withdrawals occurred without the required financial approvals from the relevant authorities.

The suspension orders from the government explicitly state that the officers cannot depart from their designated headquarters without prior approval from the competent authority. These rigorous measures emphasize the Assam Government’s steadfast dedication to enforcing rigorous financial control and compliance with established regulations. The message is clear that any type of financial misconduct will face zero tolerance.
