Prominent painter and illustrator from Assam Neel Pawan Baruah passed away at GMCH Hospital on Friday. He took his final breath today at 3.15 pm at GMCH. Assam has lost two doyens in two illustrious fields.
Notably the legendary painter was hospitalized in Gauhati Medical College Hospital(GMCH) on September 22.
On the other hand, The painter tested positive for Covid-19 on June 4th, 2021, and was admitted to GMCH. He also had high blood pressure and Alzheimer’s disease, as previously reported.

Who is Neel Pawan Baruah?
Notably, Neel Pawan Baruah, a permanent resident of Guwahati, is the founder artist of the Assam Fine Arts and Craft Society. Approximately 87 paintings by Neel Pawan Baruah are on display at the State Art Gallery as part of an exhibition titled “Neel Pawan Baruah- an exhibition of paintings.”

In 1971, he founded the Assam Fine Arts & Craft Society in Guwahati to revive the art of Brindabanivastra, the famous textile painting associated with Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev.
Baruah was born in Jorhat in 1936.He graduated in Fine Arts from Kala Bhawan, Shantiniketan. Since then he is involved with promoting the art of mask making.
He married Dipali Borthakur, the ‘Nightingale of Assam’. Dipali had only performed about 30 songs. She couldn’t sing for 50 years, from 1968 to 2018, after losing her voice at the age of 27 due to motor neuron disease. It also forced her to use a wheelchair. But she remained Assam’s nightingale until her death in December 2018. Her songs were heard by people of all ages.
