According to her owner, a Shiba Inu who rose to fame after appearing in a viral meme is suffering from leukaemia and liver disease.

In a series of Instagram posts this week, Atsuko Sato, a Japanese teacher, said the 17-year-old pooch was in “very dangerous condition” after being diagnosed with acute cholangiohepatitis, a type of digestive inflammation, and chronic lymphoma leukaemia, a type of blood cancer.

“Right now, the liver level is very low, and jaundice has appeared,” said Sato, a Japanese teacher. “But antibiotics will definitely help,” she said of Kabosu’s condition.

Kabosu’s owner revealed earlier this week that the 17-year-old Shiba Inu had not eaten or drank water on Christmas Eve. Sato, on the other hand, stated in her most recent post that the dog’s appetite had returned and showed Kabosu in several videos eating, drinking, and resting next to a cat friend.

“Kabosu has a voracious appetite,” wrote the owner. “She can drink water as well.”

The internet-famous dog rose to prominence after social media users began sharing a 2010 photo from Sato’s personal blog that showed Kabosu smirking.

Kabosu, a rescue dog, became an internet sensation after people began resharing a photo from Sato’s personal blog in 2010.

Kabosu’s smirking face, side eyes, and crossed paws were popular on the internet, and were frequently overlaid with comic sans text depicting what could be her inner dialogue. The image became known as “doge” among users, and a global meme was born.

The photo quickly became a meme, and it was frequently accompanied by comic sans captions written in the style of how users imagined a dog’s inner dialogue might sound — grammatically incorrect, two-word sentences.

The name comes from a 2005 episode of the comedic web series “Homestar Runner,” in which a character pronounces the word “dog” incorrectly. A Reddit user posted Kabosu’s picture and referred to the Shiba Inu as “Doge,” forever changing its meaning.
