Wrestlers Protest: The WFI Chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is accused of sexually abusing several female wrestlers, and the Delhi Police has told the Supreme Court that they will file an FIR against him today.

This development was reported before the Supreme Court by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta who was representing the Delhi Police.

Women wrestlers, including a minor, have accused Singh of harassing them sexually.

Vinesh Phogat is one of seven elite wrestlers who filed a petition with the Supreme Court asking for an FIR to be filed against Brij Bhushan Singh, the head of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and a BJP MP, on charges of sexual harassment.

After a three-month break, the wrestlers returned to Delhi’s Jantar Mantar to protest once more, this time calling for the release of the conclusions of the five-member oversight committee that looked into Singh’s accusations.

Despite receiving a formal complaint, they also slammed the Delhi Commission for Women for neglecting to file an FIR.

The wrestlers had requested a case against Mr. Singh, the president of the Wrestling Federation of India and a BJP MP, and had petitioned the Supreme Court for an urgent hearing. On the wrestlers’ plea, the Supreme Court had given Delhi Police notice, claiming that no case had been filed regarding their charges.

“Wrestlers who have represented India in international competitions make serious claims in the appeal about being the victims of sexual harassment. This court must take the petition under consideration, a bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud declared.

The wrestlers, who are protesting at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, have stated they will remain there until a case is filed on the situation. Star wrestlers like Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, and Bajrang Punia are among them.

Brij Bhushan Singh, who had previously denied the claims of sexual misconduct and promised to battle tenaciously to establish his innocence, yesterday published a video in which he expressed his desire to welcome death on the day he feels helpless.
