Virat Kohli, who scored a century in the series opener against Sri Lanka, will look to continue his free-scoring streak in the upcoming match at Eden Gardens on Thursday. In the 50-over match at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Kohli’s scintillating knock against the Dasun Shanaka-led side propelled Rohit Sharma and Co. to a massive total of 373-7. On Tuesday in Guwahati, Kohli smashed his 45th tonne in the 50-over format, matching Sachin Tendulkar’s massive feat in One Day Internationals (ODIs).

The 34-year-old smashed 113 off 87 balls to help Team India win the first ODI against Sri Lanka by 67 runs. At Guwahati, Kohli broke Tendulkar’s record for most centuries against Sri Lanka in the 50-over format. Kohli has nine centuries against the 1996 world champions, the most by any batter in the 50-over format’s history. In the series finale, Kohli will lead India’s batting charge, aiming to break Tendulkar’s sensational home record.

Virat Kohli vs Sachin Tendulkar, Who is the Best Cricketer?

Batting legends Kohli and Tendulkar have each scored 20 ODI centuries for Team India at home, the joint-most by any cricketer. Thus, if Kohli scores his 46th ODI century in the upcoming match against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens, he will surpass Tendulkar. If Kohli achieves another three-figure score in this series, he will be much closer to breaking Tendulkar’s record than Tendulkar was. Kohli has 20 home ODI centuries in only 101 matches, while Tendulkar took 160. His last hundred came against England in the 2011 World Cup. Since then, the legendary cricketer has only played four One-Day Internationals (ODIs), all in the same tournament.

Interestingly, Kohli has the chance to break two ODI records in the series finale against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens. In the 50-over format, the former Indian captain has scored 12,584 runs for the two-time champions. The in-form batter needs 67 runs to surpass Mahela Jayawardene’s ODI run total of 12,650.

Virat also tied Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most ‘home hundreds’ in ODIs with this century. He is also only four tonnes away from tying Tendulkar’s record for the most centuries in the format (49).

Former BBCI president Sourav Ganguly was quoted by PTI as saying, “When asked who is the better player between Sachin and Kohli, “It’s a tough question to answer. Kohli is an outstanding player. He’s played a lot of innings like this; 45 hundreds don’t happen every day. He has a unique talent. There will be times when he does not score, but he is a unique player.”
