Given some of the off-field discussions surrounding the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Stephanie Frappart, Neuza Back, and Karen Diaz have been named to officiate the Costa Rica-Germany Group E match on Thursday. FIFA announced on Tuesday that they have become the first all-female refereeing team for a men’s World Cup match.

The 38-year-old will reach another milestone in her career at Al Bayt Stadium, having already officiated a men’s World Cup qualifier in March, a men’s Champions League game in 2020, the 2019 Uefa Super Cup final, and Ligue 1 matches.

Frappart was the fourth official in Mexico’s 0-0 draw with Poland in Group C. Fifa’s pool of World Cup officials also included two other referees: Rwanda’s Salima Mukansanga and Japan’s Yamashita Yoshimi. In addition to Back and Daz Medina, US official Kathryn Nesbitt was summoned as an assistant.
