Rohit Sharma completed ten years as a full-time opener in ODIs, a significant milestone in his career. As an opener, he has scored 7663 runs at an average of 55.93 and a strike rate of 92.71, with his performance in the 2019 ODI World Cup being the highlight.

Rohit Sharma is one of cricket’s most effective openers. He’s established himself as a strong and consistent hitter capable of scoring big runs in all formats of the game. His ability to play all over the field, combined with his tremendous power, makes him an ideal opening batter. He has 7663 runs scored as an opener with an average of 55.93 and a strike rate of 92.71.

Rohit had struggled to bridge the gap between potential and performance until January 23, 2013. His ODI record was unremarkable: two hundreds against Zimbabwe in a single series, and a few fifties here and there. Because of his inconsistency, he was dropped from India’s ODI World Cup team in 2011. Eighteen months later, then-Indian captain MS Dhoni asked the Mumbaikar to bowl the new ball in one-day internationals, and Rohit found his true calling.

His ODI record now ranks alongside the all-time greats in this format: 240 games, 9681 runs, 48.65 average, highest score 264, 29 hundreds, and 48 fifties. There are three double hundreds. The highest total was 267 sixes.

“He’s been a phenomenal cricketer,” India coach Rahul Dravid said. He obviously began as a very gifted young man, and I remember seeing him for the first time when he was about 17 or 18. He just came out of the under-19s, so you can tell you’re looking at something a little different here. And he’s gone on to demonstrate that. You see a lot of kids who look different at 19, but not all of them go on to realise their full potential.

He has also played for India in all three formats of the game and has been a regular member of the ODI squad since 2007. He was a regular member of India’s Test team until 2013, when he took a break to concentrate on the game’s shorter formats.
