Neymar, the Brazilian football superstar, was cleared on Tuesday of corruption charges stemming from his 2013 transfer from Santos to Barcelona.

A Spanish court acquitted all nine defendants in the trial. This included Neymar’s parents, FC Barcelona and former club presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell, Santos FC and former president Odilio Rodrigues Filho, and N&N – the company founded by Neymar’s parents to manage his career. DIS, a Brazilian company, claimed they lost money on Neymar’s transfer because they owned 40% of Neymar’s sporting rights at Santos and believed the true value of the deal was obscured by those involved.

“It has not been proven that there was a false contract or that DIS was intended to be harmed,” said the court in a statement. Neymar*s high-profile trial began in mid-October in Barcelona, less than a month before the World Cup in Qatar. Initially, prosecutors sought a two-year prison sentence.

Neymar is now fixed to take a short break going to follow Brazil’s disheartening quarter-final exit at the 2022 World Cup before going back to action with PSG towards the end of the month.

The 124-cap Selecao international was visibly emotional after Brazil’s 4-2 penalty shootout loss to Croatia last Friday, and the attacker has hinted at international retirement.
