Favourites Brazil began their FIFA World Cup 2022 campaign with a 2-0 victory over Serbia at Lusail Stadium on Friday. Richarlison scored both goals in the five-time champions’ first Group G match. After a scoreless first half, the World No. 1 team came out firing in the second half to outclass Serbia, who looked out of their depth in the end.

Richarlison’s prolific scoring streak for Brazil continued as the five-time champions opened their World Cup campaign by finally breaking the resolve of a determined Serbia — thanks to the Tottenham striker’s wonder goal in a second-half double.

Brazil dominated the game for much of the first half but they were unable to pose many doubts to a well-drilled Serbian defence. Instead, they had to rely on individual improvisation and inspiration, with Neymar’s clever inswinging corner only narrowly being clawed away by goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.

Richarlison reflected on the tears he shed when he thought he might miss the World Cup after scoring both goals in Brazil’s 2-0 win over Serbia in Doha on Thursday. “It’s a child hood dream come true,” the Tottenham Hotspur forward said after scoring a second-half brace in the Group G match at the Lusail Stadium. “We played well, especially in the second half when our opponents began to tyre and we capitalised on that.”

Brazil striker Richarlison scored twice, including a spectacular swivelling volley, to help his country begin its quest for a sixth World Cup title with a 2-0 win over Serbia on Thursday. Richarlison, spearheading an intimidating four-pronged attack, steered home a rebound in the 62nd minute after Serbia goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic saved an angled shot from Vinicius Jr. after marauding work from Neymar. Richarlison’s second equaled some of the great goals in Brazil’s illustrious history.
