The Supreme Court issued a show-cause notice of contempt to an advocate on record (AoR) on Friday for signing a petition that contained snide remarks about a high court and accused its judges of bias. Outraged by this, the Supreme Court issued a contempt notice to the petitioner’s advocate and his advocate-on-record in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court stated in its notice that the advocates who filed the petition on behalf of the plaintiffs will be held in contempt of court if they make derogatory remarks about the judges in the case.

A bench led by Justice BR Gavai issued show-cause notices of contempt to both the AoR and the petitioner, taking strong exception to the “derogatory” statements made in the petition filed in September challenging a Karnataka high court order.
The court emphasized a 1955 Supreme Court decision that warned lawyers against stamping pleadings without thoroughly reading them.

In its order, a bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and AS Oka stated that keeping names on hold was not acceptable and that it did not understand the government’s reasoning.
“… we clarified that once the Government has expressed its reservation and the Collegium has addressed it, only the appointment must take place following the second reiteration. As a result, keeping the names pending is unacceptable. We believe that the method of keeping the names on hold, whether duly recommended or reiterated, is becoming a device to force these people to withdraw their names, as has occurred.”
