Cyclone Sitrang: As the southwest monsoon fades, this year’s first cyclone is brewing over the South Andaman Sea, and its surroundings are expected to receive heavy rain. A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclone after October 22, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The India Meteorological Department issued a warning on Tuesday about a low-pressure area that is expected to form over the southeast and east-central Bay of Bengal in the next two days and could intensify into a cyclonic storm affecting the states of Odisha, West Bengal, and North Andhra Pradesh.

“It is expected to move west-northwestward and consolidate into a depression over the central Bay of Bengal by October 22 morning. Following that, it is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over west-central BoB (Bay of Bengal) “According to a press release issued by the India Meteorological Department.

Following Asani, the March cyclone named by Sri Lanka, this cyclone is expected to be named after Thailand’s proposal ‘Sitrang,’ according to the list posted by IMD in April 2020. The list, which includes 13 names proposed by each member country, is organised in such a way that everyone gets to vote in a sequential order.

The depression is expected to be well-marked and develop into a storm, but no predictions on the system’s intensity or path have been made. According to IMD’s regional department for monitoring tropical cyclones in the north Indian Ocean, the cyclone’s peak intensity could range from cyclonic storm to very severe cyclonic storm, but a clearer picture will emerge in the next 2-3 days.
