A rally against unemployment organized by the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) in Shillong today turned violent, injuring several people, including media personnel, and causing damage to vehicles. Some rallygoers were seen chasing and assaulting people with flag poles.
The rally was organized to raise awareness about Meghalaya’s sharp increase in unemployment.

According to police, a rally held here on Friday by the Federation of Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo People (FKJGP) turned violent, injuring many people, including two journalists.

The police have yet to confirm how many people were injured during the Meghalaya anti-unemployment rally.
The violence started as soon as the rally began marching on the Guwahati-Shillong road that leads to Khyndailad.

According to an eyewitness, while the rally appeared to be normal, some FKJGP members, many of whom were masked, punched, kicked, and pushed passers-by indiscriminately, causing panic and massive traffic jams.
People were beaten with flag poles at Dhankheti junction, and shopkeepers were forced to close their doors as panic gripped the hill city.

The attacks primarily targeted non-tribals.
Prestone Tynsong, Deputy Chief Minister, stated that police have been instructed to take appropriate action.
While apologizing for the incident, FKJGP President Dundee Khongsit stated that he did not expect such an untoward incident to occur.
“However, the state government is ignoring the state’s serious unemployment problem,” he added.
