Arunachal Pradesh: India opposed China’s effort to rename 11 sites in Arunachal Pradesh, which Beijing claims as South Tibet, saying such steps would not change the fact that the northeastern state is an important part of the country.

China’s civil affairs ministry renamed 11 locations in Arunachal Pradesh at a time when the two nations’ bilateral relations are at their worst in six decades due to a military standoff along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh (LAC).

The MEA statement came only hours after China announced a third set of names for Arunachal  in Chinese, Tibetan, and pinyin characters to bolster its territorial claim to the Indian state.

On Sunday, China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs revealed the standardised names of 11 localities in Arunachal Pradesh, which it refers to as “Zangnan, the southern section of Tibet,” in compliance with State Council, China’s cabinet, laws on geographical names.

India has previously rejected such renaming of locations in Arunachal , emphasizing that the northeastern state is an important and inseparable part of the country.

According to a brief statement issued on Sunday by China’s civil affairs ministry, “our ministry, together with relevant departments, has standardized some geographical names in southern Tibet in accordance with the relevant regulations of the State Council (China’s cabinet) on the management of geographical names.”

The Congress expressed strong opposition to China renaming many locations in Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday, blaming it on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “eloquent silence” on Chinese border moves.

According to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, this is the third time China has renamed places in Arunachal.
