The first greenfield airport in Arunachal Pradesh, known as “Donyi Polo,” inaugurated on Saturday in Itanagar by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an important move to improve connectivity in the region’s North-East. According to a government press release, the airport’s name honours the ancient indigenous veneration of the Sun (Donyi) and the Moon (Polo) in Arunachal.

The airport, which was built at a cost of more than Rs 640 crore, would increase connectivity and serve as a catalyst for the expansion of trade and tourism in the area, according to the government.

FfgAroty Panyang, an Arunachali architect from the East Siang neighbourhood, created the gate. On Wednesday, Khandu opened “The Great Hornbill Gate.”

During peak hours, the Donyi Polo airport can accommodate up to 300 passengers and has eight check-in counters. The airport is designed to accommodate Airbus-320 operations. It is located is only 15 kilometres from Itanagar, the state capital of Arunachal Pradesh. It can also accommodate large aircraft such as the Boeing 747 according to reports.
