Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for the Environment) movement on Thursday at Gujarat’s Statue of Unity. Mission LiFE, as envisioned by PM Modi, is expected to be an India-led global mass movement that will nudge individual and collective action to protect and preserve the environment, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

PM Modi launched Mission LiFE in the presence of the UN Secretary-General. French President Emmanuel Macron stated that he is eager to collaborate with India to make this initiative a success.

The announcement comes ahead of next month’s major UN climate conference in Egypt.

Modi and Guterres jointly launched the action plan, which includes a list of lifestyle changes that can be implemented as climate-friendly behaviour, as well as the logo and tagline for Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment).

Mission LiFE, according to Modi, will strengthen the concept of a pro-people planet, with a three-pronged strategy for changing people’s collective approach to sustainability. This includes encouraging people to take simple but effective environmental actions in their daily lives (demand), allowing industries and markets to respond quickly to changing demand (supply), and influencing government and industrial policy to support both sustainable consumption and production (policy).

PM Modi stated that the Mission LiFE mantra is ‘Lifestyle for Environment.’ “It connects people’s powers for the protection of the earth and teaches them how to use them more effectively.” Mission LiFE makes the fight against climate change democratic, allowing everyone to contribute to the best of their abilities. It motivates us to do everything we can in our daily lives to protect the environment. It believes that by making lifestyle changes, we can protect the environment.”
