Gujarat will hold elections in two phases on December 1 and 5, with results being announced on December 8 along with Himachal Pradesh, according to Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar.

Voting for 89 of Gujarat’s 182 assembly seats will take place on December 1 and the remaining 93 seats on December 5.

Gujarat has a 182-member assembly, and the BJP won 99 seats in the last elections, its sixth consecutive victory, while the Congress put up a valiant fight, taking 77 seats.

In percentage terms, the BJP received 49.05 percent of valid votes, while the Congress received 42.97 percent.

Following the assembly elections, the Congress suffered a wave of defections, while the BJP increased its House tally to 111. The Congress was reduced to 62 members.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has set its sights on Gujarat and has begun campaigning. After a successful foray in Punjab, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has made several trips to Gujarat in an attempt to make inroads for the AAP in the state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also made several trips to Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh to inaugurate and launch projects.

Furthermore, these elections, along with a few others in other states in 2023, are seen as crucial in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when Modi and the BJP will seek a third consecutive term at the helm of the country.

Gujarat’s Legislative Assembly has 182 members. This election will feature a three-way fight between the ruling BJP, the Congress, and the Aam Aadmi Party.

While Himachal Pradesh elections will be held in a single phase on November 12, vote counting will take place on December 8.

By keeping the Himachal Pradesh counting date nearly a month after the election, the commission sent a clear message that Gujarat votes would also be counted on December 8.
