The opposition Congress in Assam launched a state version of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, the party’s ongoing Kanyakumari to Kashmir foot march, on Tuesday in an effort to reconnect with voters in the northeastern state.

The rally, part of a nationwide campaign to resurrect the grand old party, began in Golokganj, a town on the India-Bangladesh border, with senior party leaders in attendance. Jitendra Singh, Congress national general secretary-cum-in-charge of the Assam unit, APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah, Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi, and other senior leaders of the state unit were in attendance. “It is the Congress Party’s collective response to save the country and the state from the BJP’s divisive policies. We started the yatra in Golokganj and it will travel across Assam to Sadiya, the state’s easternmost point,” Borah explained.

Party leaders prayed at a temple, satra, mosque, and gurudwara before beginning the yatra. The’satra’ (Vaishnavite monastery) is approximately 100 metres from the international border.

To reach Sadiya, the yatra will travel from Dhubri through Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Nalbari, Kamrup, Guwahati, Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, and Tinsukia.

The first day’s event featured state unit chief Bhupen Kumar Borah, Lok Sabha MP from Assam Gaurav Gogoi, and several senior leaders. The yatra will travel through 13 of Assam’s 33 districts, covering 834 kilometers in 70 days, culminating at Sadiya in Tinsukia district in the state’s east.

On the 56th day of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, which is currently taking place in Hyderabad, actress Pooja Bhatt was seen briefly joining it.

The official Twitter handle of the yatra wrote, “Everyone is joining ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra,'” after sharing a video of the actress with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Pooja Bhatt has now joined this ideological padyatra.”

Bharat Jodo Yatra:

The Bharat Jodo Yatra arrived in Hyderabad yesterday. Rahul Gandhi hoisted the national flag at Charminar, the city’s symbolic monument.

The event was held to commemorate Rajiv Gandhi’s visit to Charminar on October 19, 1990, to launch the Sadbhavana Yatra for communal peace and harmony in Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
