An official notification states that the Governor of Assam has declared a holiday on February 14, 2024, for the observance of the ‘ALI-AYE-LIGANG’ festival in ten districts.

The designated districts for the holiday include Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Majuli, and Charaideo.

All state government offices and educational institutions within the jurisdiction of these ten districts will remain closed on February 14, 2024, in celebration of this holiday.

The festival signifies the beginning of seed sowing. The festival’s name is a combination of three terms: “Ali” representing legumes, “Aye” representing seed, and “Ligang” signifying the act of sowing.

The Mishing tribe observes the festival Ali-Aye-Ligang, symbolizing the initiation of the harvesting cycle on the first Wednesday of the Fagun month in the Assamese calendar, usually falling in February.
