He was from Kalpa in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district. Shyam Saran Negi’s death was confirmed by Kinnaur Deputy Commissioner Abid Hussain Sadiq.

His most recent vote, on November 2, was his 34th since the country’s first general election in 1947. (The assembly election in Himachal Pradesh is scheduled for November 12, and postal balloting has already begun.)

According to the Deputy Commissioner, the district administration will perform the last rites with full honours. Mr. Negi voted in the Himachal Pradesh assembly elections by postal ballot three days ago.

The Election Commission has mourned the death of Shyam Saran Negi, India’s first voter. According to the Commission, he was not only the first voter in Independent India, but also a man of exceptional faith in democracy. Even before his death, he voted in the upcoming Himachal Pradesh Assembly Elections via postal ballot on the 2nd of this month, according to the Commission.

Anurag Singh Thakur, Minister of Information and Broadcasting, also expressed condolences on the death of Shyam Saran Negi. Mr. Thakur stated in a tweet that Shyam Saran Negi exercised his franchise 34 times in his 106-year life, making him a conscious citizen.

Negi, who was born on July 1, 1917, worked as a schoolteacher in Kalpa. When India held its first general elections after the end of British rule in 1947, on October 25, 1951, Negi was the first to vote. Although the majority of the voting in that first election took place in February 1952, Himachal went to the polls five months earlier because the weather in the state is inclement in February and March, and heavy snowfall during that time would have made it impossible for citizens to reach the polling stations. Shyam Saran Negi also had a cameo in the Hindi film Sanam Re.
