Rahul Gandhi Defamation Case: A Surat sessions court awarded Congress leader Rahul Gandhi bail and postponed his sentence till the outcome of his appeal in the criminal defamation case stemming from his 2019 statement against thieves with the surname Modi. According to the news agency PTI, the court of Additional Sessions Judge R P Mogera will hear his request for suspension of conviction on April 13.

The 52-year-old leader was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison last month by a lower court in Surat for an election campaign speech in 2019 in which he linked PM Modi’s last name to two fugitive businessmen, observing how the “thieves” shared the same last name. Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Verma convicted him on March 23, and the court postponed his sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal. On the same day, he was given bail.

While convicting Gandhi on March 23, the court postponed the sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal and granted bail on a bond of Rs 15,000. Gandhi was disqualified as a Lok Sabha member the next day. The Congress party is hoping that the court would overturn his conviction, allowing him to be reinstated as an LS MP.

Immediately after a Surat court granted Rahul Gandhi bail in a 2019 defamation case, the Congress leader declared on Monday that the fight to maintain democracy is a battle against ‘Mitrkaal,’ and truth is his weapon.

According to one of the lawyers defending Rahul Gandhi in his defamation case, until the conviction against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is suspended, he will remain disqualified in Lok Sabha.
