Indian Olympic and World Championships gold medalist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has been nominated for the Men’s World Athlete of the Year award in the World Athletics Awards 2023.
The 25 year old had a brilliant year, he won gold medal at the recently concluded Asian Games in Hangzhou. Chopra made history by becoming the first Indian to win the gold medal at the World Athletics Championship in Budapest, he then finished second at the Diamond League 2023.
The other nominees are shot putter Ryan Crouser of USA, pole vaulters Mondo Duplantis of Sweden, 3000m steeplechaser Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco, Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway (1500m/5000m), marathoner Kelvin Kiptum of Kenya, decathlete Pierce LePage of Canada, sprinter Noah Lyles of USA, race walker Alvaro Martin of Spain, long jumper Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece and 400m hurdler Karsten Warholm of Norway.
World Athlete of the year Award is presented every year, to the best athlete in the world based on their performances throughout the season.
The Award will be determined through a three-way voting process. The fans will be able to vote online via World Athletics social media platforms but the weightage for them is 25%. The World Athletics Council and the World Athletics Family will be able to cast their votes via email with the former’s vote being counted for 50%. The weightage for the World Athletics Family’s voters is 25%. Voting will continue till 28th October and the five finalist will be announce on 13/14 of November.
The winner of the World Athlete of the Year 2023 award will be announced on World Athletics’ social media platforms on December 11.
