India is commemorating October 31 as National Unity Day to honour veteran freedom fighter Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who was also the country’s first home minister and was instrumental in convincing many princely states to join the Union of India after Independence. As the country remains grateful for Patel’s crucial efforts that led to India’s integration, the day is observed as a tribute to that “national unity.” In 2014, the government declared that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birthday, October 31, would be observed as National Unity Day, or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas.

History of National Unity Day:

Declaring in 2014 that India would now observe National Unity Day on October 31, the central government stated in an official statement that this occasion “will provide an opportunity to reaffirm our nation’s inherent strength and resilience to withstand actual and potential threats to our country’s unity, integrity, and security.”

Vallabhbhai Patel was dubbed “Sardar” (chief) for his ability to lead the country through the struggle for independence and beyond, particularly during the integration of the princely states and the India-Pakistan War of 1947.

Significance:

On National Unity Day, the following pledge is read aloud in government buildings:

“I solemnly pledge that I will devote myself to preserving the nation’s unity, integrity, and security, and that I will work hard to spread this message among my fellow citizens.” I take this pledge in the spirit of my country’s unification, which was made possible by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s vision and actions. I also solemnly resolve to make my own contribution to ensuring my country’s internal security.”

All government offices, public sector undertakings (PSUs), and other public institutions are required by official order to hold a pledge-taking ceremony on October 31 to commemorate Rashtriya Ekta Diwas.

This year, on the occasion of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, or National Unity Day, the UGC has asked colleges and universities to hold a pledge-taking ceremony and an exhibition on the life of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

According to the official UGC notification, “a pledge-taking ceremony may also be organised to mark the occasion of the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas on October 31, 2022, as a special occasion to foster and reinforce dedication to preserve and strengthen unity, integrity, and security of the nation, by reinforcing the values of a strong and united India.”
