India may already have surpassed China as the world’s most populous nation, which is a significant development. The World Population Review (WPR) estimates that India will have 141.7 crore people by the end of 2022. According to official announcements, that is just over 50 lakh more than the 141.2 crore figures China reported on January 17 when there was the first fall since the 1960s.

The major economy of India, where 50% of the population is under 30, is predicted to grow at the fastest rate in the world. According to the UN, the milestone was intended to be reached this year. WPR estimates that as of January 18, there were 142.3 crore people living in India. India’s population growth has slowed, but according to WPR, it will continue to rise at least until 2050.

According to a different estimate from the research platform Macrotrends, India has 1.428 billion people, according to Bloomberg. India’s population growth has slowed, but according to World Population Review, the country’s population will still grow until at least 2050.

Another estimate from the research platform Macrotrends places the most recent figure for India at 142.8 crore. Due to disruptions from a pandemic in 2021, population surveys were delayed, and the country did not publish its once every ten years census data.

About 800 million people in India still rely on free food rations from the government, the largest programme of its kind in the world, despite the country’s rapid economic growth prior to the Covid pandemic and its relatively strong recovery.

The third-largest economy in Asia currently produces enough food on its own. In terms of producing rice, wheat, and sugar, it ranks second. India is the world’s largest consumer of sugar and the top importer of edible oils due to its expanding middle class. It is the third-largest purchaser of crude oil and the second-largest consumer of steel, gold, and other metals. It is also home to the world’s third-largest domestic aviation market.
