Gujarat Morbi bridge collapse: According to officials, a nearly 100-year-old suspension bridge over the Machchhu River in Morbi, Gujarat, crumbled on Sunday evening, causing several people standing on it to fall into the water.

 

Gujarat DGP Ashish Bhatia has confirmed 78 deaths as a result of the Morbi cable bridge collapse. When the British-era suspension bridge on the Machchhu river collapsed around 6:30 p.m., it was packed with people. Several people on the bridge were thrown into the river.


An Indian Army team from an artillery brigade near Dhrangdhra, including doctors and paramedics, has already arrived at the accident site in Morbi and is assisting with rescue and relief efforts. According to defence officials, another Army team with doctors and other relief supplies is on its way to the site.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a three-day tour of Gujarat and Rajasthan, has decided to cancel his roadshow in Ahmedabad on Monday in the aftermath of the Morbi cable bridge collapse, which killed over 60 people on Sunday evening.

 

The suspension bridge, located 200 kilometres from Ahmedabad, collapsed at 6.42 p.m. this evening, after 500 people gathered on it to perform rituals related to the Chhath puja. Over the weekend, daytime videos from the location showed the bridge rocking dangerously as people walked across it.

The administration is rescuing people who fell into the river after the bridge collapsed, with the assistance of locals.

The state government has announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh for each deceased person and Rs 50,000 for those injured in the accident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a three-day visit to Gujarat ahead of Assembly elections, spoke with Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and other officials about the incident shortly after it became public. The prime minister has requested that the situation be closely and continuously monitored, and that all possible assistance be extended to those affected.

 

Even Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal expressed grief over the incident and prayed for the lives and health of those injured after the bridge collapsed.
