Priya, a 17-year-old footballer who lost a leg after doctors allegedly botched her surgery, died today in a Chennai hospital.

Priya lost her leg on Monday after two follow-up surgeries at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai since the first surgery on November 7. Two doctors have been suspended, and the minister of health has promised legal action.

After suffering a ligament tear in her right knee, the girl underwent arthroscopy repair surgery, but complications caused her leg to be amputated. She died early Tuesday morning from multiple organ failure.

Tamil Nadu BJP chief Annamalai slammed the DMK-led state government, demanding that the family member be given a government job and a solatium of Rs 2 crore.
“Shocking news of college student, football player sister Priya’s death at Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital, Chennai due to wrong treatment by government doctors during surgery,” he tweeted.

On November 7, the initial surgery was performed at the Periyar Nagar hospital, and Priya began complaining of leg pain that evening. The doctors prescribed a tight compression bandage and pain relievers. She was transferred to RGGGH the next morning due to a suspected blood clot in her leg. Following a battery of tests, RGGGH doctors informed Priya’s family that the tissues in her right leg were dead. Only an amputation, they said, could save her life.

R. Priya was a first-year Physical Education student at Queen Mary’s College in Chennai.
