According to officials, the department is reviewing documents related to the company’s business operations as well as those related to its Indian arm.

The Income Tax Department conducts surveys only on a company’s business premises and does not raid the residences or other locations of its promoters or directors.

Employees’ cellphones were confiscated, and they were told to go home, while those working the afternoon shift at the BBC’s Delhi office were told to work from home.

The Congress party slammed the Centre for conducting IT raids on BBC premises. “First came the BBC documentary, which was banned,” the Congress tweeted in Hindi. IT has now raided BBC. Unannounced emergency.”

Employees’ cellphones were confiscated, and they were told to go home, while those working the afternoon shift at the BBC’s Delhi office were told to work from home.

They claimed that two people in charge of the Urdu services, as well as officials from the finance department, were inside the office.

In Mumbai, the BBC has two offices: one in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and another in Khar.

IT personnel were present at the BKC office, while employees at the BBC’s Khar office were asked to leave.

The news comes just weeks after the broadcaster aired a two-part documentary on the Gujarat riots of 2002 and India.
