An Iranian man known as the “World’s Dirtiest Man” for not taking a shower for decades has died at the age of 94, according to state media.
Amou Haji, who had not washed in more than 50 years and was single, died on Sunday in the village of Dejgah in the southern province of Fars, according to IRNA.

Haji had avoided showering for fear of “getting sick,” according to a local official quoted by the agency.

However, “for the first time a few months ago, villagers took him to a bathroom to wash,” according to IRNA.

According to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), the Islamic Republic of Iran’s official news agency, “Amou Haji,” an endearing catchphrase for an elder, died on Sunday in the village of Dejgah in the southern province of Fars.

According to the Tehran Times, Haji ate roadkill (animals killed on roads by cars or other vehicles), smoked a pipe filled with animal excrement, and believed that cleanliness would make him sick. It is also claimed that there are photos of him smoking multiple cigarettes at the same time.

According to Iranian media outlets, a short documentary film titled “The Strange Life of Amou Haji” was made about his life in 2013.

Amou Haji had avoided showering due to concerns about “getting sick.” However, “villagers had taken him to a bathroom to wash for the first time a few months ago.” Haji spent most of his life alone in an open brick hut built by villagers after he began sleeping in a hole in the ground, according to the New York Post.

According to the locals, Haji’s eccentricities stemmed from ’emotional setbacks’ in his youth. The Tehran Times reported in 2014 that Haji also avoided eating fresh food. Instead, he smoked a pipe made of animal excrement and ate rotten porcupines.
