To perform Hajj or Umrah in Saudi Arabia, a female pilgrim no longer needs to be accompanied by a male guardian or ‘Mahram.’ The Saudi minister of Hajj and Umrah made the announcement. The minister’s remarks at a press conference at the Kingdom’s embassy in Cairo effectively ended the debate over the mandatory ‘Mahram’ for female pilgrims.

According to reports, this announcement was made at a press conference held at the Kingdom’s Embassy in Cairo.

According to Ahmed Saleh Halabi, the advisor of Hajj and Umrah Services, a woman can now perform Hajj or Umrah without a mahram. “The supervisor of fatwa at Al-Azhar Al-Sharif in Egypt, Abbas Shoman, declared last March that a woman is permitted to perform Hajj and Umrah without an accompanying mahram,” he added.

He also provided an update on the recent expansion of the Great Mosque in Mecca, which is by far the largest and most expensive expansion in history, with the cost now exceeding $53 billion, or nearly 200 billion Saudi Riyals.

“Many women come to the Kingdom to work without a mahram, and there have been no major incidents due to the security we live in… There is no reason for women to be afraid of coming without a mahram because the reason for this no longer exists “According to Ibrahim Hussein, a former minister’s advisor.

Hussein also emphasized the importance of women’s security and protection. “Security has been extended throughout the Kingdom, as well as in all modes of transportation and at ports, providing women with full protection,” she said. Furthermore, a solid infrastructure, including an anti-harassment system, has been established in legislation.”
