The global population reached 8 billion on Tuesday, after adding a billion people in the previous 12 years, with India on the verge of supplanting China as the world’s most populous country next year.
Reaching eight billion people is “a sign of notion of sustainable development, but it’s also a significant risk to our future,” said John Wilmoth, the UN’s population division director, on Tuesday.

According to the UN, the global milestone represents significant advances in public health that have reduced the risk of death and increased life expectancy, but it is also a clarion call for humanity to look beyond the numbers and meet its shared responsibility to protect people and the planet, beginning with the most vulnerable.

According to United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), ” While the world’s population is expected to reach 10.4 billion by the 2080s, the overall rate of growth is slowing. The world is more demographically diverse than ever before, with countries experiencing a wide range of population trends, from growth to decline. Today, two-thirds of the world’s population lives in a low fertility environment, with lifetime fertility of fewer than 2.1 births per woman. At the same time, population growth has shifted to the world’s poorest countries, the majority of which are in Sub-Saharan Africa.”
The UNFPA further stated that ” The world population increased from 7 to 8 billion in about 12 years, but the next billion is expected to take about 14.5 years (2037), reflecting the slowdown in global growth. The world population is expected to peak at around 10.4 billion people in the 2080s and remain there until 2100. Around 70% of the additional population in the increase from 7 to 8 billion was in low-income and lower-middle-income countries. These two groups of countries are expected to account for more than 90% of global growth as the population grows from 8 to 9 billion.”
