Sri Lanka cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka, who was part of the national squad for the T20 World Cup in Australia, was arrested on sexual assault charges on Sunday, according to team sources.
According to reports, Gunathilaka, 31, was arrested and taken to Sydney City police station in the early hours of Sunday following an investigation into an alleged sexual assault on a woman on November 2.
Sri Lanka Cricket board confirmed that Danushka Gunathilaka has been arrested on the allegations of sexual assault of a Women and will appear on court tomorrow.

Sri Lanka cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka was reportedly arrested by Sydney police on Sunday during the 2022 edition of the ICC World T20. The Sri Lankan batter was arrested in the early hours of the morning from the team hotel in Sydney after being charged by local police in connection with an alleged sexual assault incident.

According to the latest developments, Gunathilaka was arrested after a 29-year-old woman was sexually assaulted at a Rose Bay residence.

“The woman met with the man after communicating with him for several days through an online dating app; it is alleged he then sexually assaulted her on the evening of Wednesday, November 2, 2022.” A crime scene examination was conducted yesterday at an address in Rose Bay as part of ongoing investigations, according to a New South Wales police statement.
Gunathilaka did not play in Sri Lanka’s World Cup campaign during the Super 12 stage after being ruled out of the tournament in the first round. Due to a hamstring injury, the Sri Lanka batter missed the final round of the T20 World Cup. Despite being replaced in the World Cup squad, Gunathilaka remained with the team in Australia.
