Canada’s prime minister, Justin Trudeau, and his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, are separating, the couple have announced on Instagram, with a statement that appeared to mark the end of their 18-year marriage.
On Wednesday they simultaneously posted the statement on their Instagram pages, saying the decision to separate came after “many meaningful and difficult conversations”.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, the Trudeaus have signed a legal separation agreement. The statement said. “Despite their separation, the couple emphasized that they will continue to be a close-knit family, with a strong focus on raising their children in a safe, loving, and collaborative environment and ask to respect the privacy for the well being of the children.
Trudeau, 51, and Grégoire Trudeau, 48, were married in late May 2005, and they have three children Xavier, 15, Ella-Grace, 14, and Hadrien, 9.
