Aruna Miller: As millions of Americans voted in key races for governor, secretary of state, and other offices down the ballot, Indian-American woman Aruna Miller became Maryland’s first immigrant Lieutenant Governor on Wednesday, according to news outlets.

The 58-year-old Democrat is said to be from Hyderabad and immigrated to the United States from India when she was seven years old.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology in 1989 and worked for the Montgomery County Department of Transportation for 25 years.

She was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 2010 to 2018.

She ran for Congress in Maryland’s 6th Congressional District in 2018, finishing second out of eight candidates.

Miller wrote in a series of tweets after winning the midterm elections on Tuesday: “I’ve been excited about America’s promise since I first arrived in the country in 1972. I will never stop fighting to ensure that everyone has access to that promise. And this promise begins with a pledge to create a Maryland that leaves no one behind.”

Miller served as Wes Moore’s running mate in his election as Maryland’s first African-American governor, defeating Republican Dan Cox in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans 2-1.

Aruna is married to Dave Miller and they have three daughters. She now lives in Montgomery County.

“There’s nowhere I’d rather be than among voters!” “Our community has pushed us to be our best selves this campaign, and I cannot begin to express how grateful I am for your dedication and support,” she said in a tweet on Wednesday morning, as midterm election voting began.

“From Western Maryland to Southern Maryland, Charm City to Pocomoke City to Ocean City, Gorgeous Prince George’s to Mountain Maryland. Our Maryland is one where people feel safe in their communities and in their skin, where we show the nation that our rights are not up for grabs.” She further wrote in a series of tweets.
