The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has decided to prohibit motorized rickshaws from operating in the city beginning next week. The GMC issued an official notification in accordance with the move on Thursday, December 29, 2022, during a meeting held at the civic body’s head office in Uzan Bazar, Guwahati.

The previously pending decision was made in order to prevent accidents on the busy streets of Guwahati.

The Civic body has given motor-fitted rickshaws a week to submit their mechanized motors or else an operation will be conducted, with a fine levied against the rickshaws that do not meet the deadline, as well as a drive to dismantle the mechanized motors.

GMC officials claimed that motorized rickshaws are more prone to accidents and that they have received numerous complaints about the rickshaws, which have largely replaced manually drawn rickshaws.

Commuters, on the other hand, believe that motorised rickshaws are superior to manually pulled rickshaws because they reduce travel time and the labour required to pull them.

They claimed that authorities do not properly regulate e-rickshaws.

Notably, motorised rickshaws have a dynamo, a motor, and a battery at the back, which distinguishes them from manually drawn rickshaws.
