International Mother Language Day 2023: Every year on February 21, the world celebrates International Mother Language Day to raise awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity, as well as multilingualism.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) first introduced it in 1999. Every year, a new theme is introduced, and this year’s theme is “Multilingual education – a necessity for educational transformation.” The day was established on the initiative of Bangladesh, according to the UNESCO website.

The United Nations website highlights the significance of this day, saying, “Globally, 40% of the population lacks access to an education in a language that they speak or understand. However, there is a growing understanding of the importance of multilingual education, particularly in early childhood education, and a greater commitment to its development in public life. International Mother Language Day acknowledges the importance of languages and multilingualism in advancing inclusion, as well as the Sustainable Development Goals’ emphasis on leaving no one behind.”
