Oscars 2023: RRR’s Naatu Naatu, Last Film Show, among others shortlisted for the 95th Academy Awards

For the Oscars 2023 awards, four Indian films have made the shortlist in various categories. The shortlisted entries include The Elephant Whisperers in the category for Documentary Short Film, All That Breathes in the category for Documentary Feature Film, and RRR’s well-known catchy song Naatu Naatu in the category for Best Original Song. Chhello Show is also known as The Last Show in English in the international feature film category.


The shortlists for 10 categories—documentary feature film, documentary short film, international feature film, makeup and hairstyling, music (original score), music (original song), animated short film, live action short film, sound, and visual effects—were revealed by the organisation that oversees the awards.

In addition to “Nothing Is Lost (You Give Me Strength)” from “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Ciao Papa” from “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” “Hold My Hand” from “Top Gun: Maverick,” and “Carolina” from “Where the Crawdads Sing,” “Naatu Naatu” will compete

Chhello Show: Last Film Show in English, directed by Pan Nalin, is a Gujarati-language coming-of-age tale about a young boy’s love affair with cinema in a Saurashtra village. The film is among the international feature film shortlist lineup and was produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur and Dheer Momaya.

Shaunak Sen’s well-known film All That Breathes, an international co-production in Hindi, is competing for a spot in the top five of the best documentary feature category.

Kartiki Gonsalves’ documentary The Elephant Whisperers shows an unbreakable bond between two abandoned elephants and their keepers.

In the past few years, India has submitted the following films for the Oscars: Koozhangal, Jallikattu, Gully Boy, Village Rockstars, Newton, and Visaranani, all of which were not selected for the Oscar shortlist. Mother India, Salaam Bombay, and Lagaan are the only Indian movies that have received Oscar nominations thus far.
