Unilever shampoos are popular in many countries, including India, but there is bad news for those who use them. Unilever Plc in the United States recalled its aerosol dry shampoos, including Dove and Tresemme, after discovering that they were contaminated with benzene, a carcinogen.
Other brands recalled, according to a notice posted on the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) website, include Nexxus, Suave, Tresemme, and Tigi, which manufactures Rockaholic and Bed Head dry shampoos. According to reports, the move raised concerns about the safety of aerosol in personal hygiene products.

The propellants used to spray personal-care products from cans are primarily to blame for the problem.
Unilever Plc has issued a voluntary recall of 19 well-known dry shampoo aerosol items distributed in the United States. Leukemia and other blood cancers can be caused by benzene, which is classified as a human carcinogen.
TRESemmé Dry Shampoo Volumizing, TRESemmé Dry Shampoo Fresh and Clean, TRESemmé Pro Pure Dry Shampoo, Dove Dry Shampoo Volume and Dullness, Dove Dry Shampoo Fresh Coconut, Dove Dry Shampoo Invisible, Dove Dry Shampoo Detox and Purify, Dove Dry Shampoo Fresh and Floral, Dove Dry Shampoo Ultra Clean, Dove Dry Shampoo Clarifying Charcoal, and Dove Dry Shampoo Go Active is among the products that have been recalled.
“Daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products at the levels detected in testing would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences,” according to the FDA. Aside from Unilever’s recall, several other similar products, including Johnson & Johnson’s Neutrogena, Edgewell Personal Care Co.’s Banana Boat, and Beiersdorf AG’s Coppertone, have been recalled in the last 18 months.
