World Food Day, observed this year on October 16, serves as a reminder that food insecurity and poor nutrition remain widespread and are set to worsen as a result of a variety of ongoing threats such as climate change, inflation, geopolitical conflict, and others. India has dropped to 107th place out of 121 countries in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2022, from 101st place in 2021, trailing its neighbors Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal.
India was ranked 101st out of 116 countries in 2021. It is now ranked 107th out of 121 countries on the list. The GHI score for India has also declined, from 38.8 in 2000 to a range of 28.2 – 29.1 between 2014 and 2022.

The report, compiled collectively by the Irish aid organization Concern Worldwide and the German organization Welt Hunger Hilfe, described India’s hunger as “serious.”
The theme for this year is ‘Leave NO ONE Behind.’ According to the FAO, current global challenges are limiting access to and availability of nutritious food.

Seventeen countries, including China, Turkey, and Kuwait, shared the top spot with GHI scores of less than five, according to the Global Hunger Index website, which tracks hunger and malnutrition.

History of World Food Day :
Every year on October 16, the world celebrates World Food Day. It commemorates the establishment of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. Hundreds of events and outreach activities take place around the world, bringing together governments, businesses, the general public, and the media to raise awareness and action for those who are hungry.

According to the UN,” In a call for urgent action to address the root causes of rising hunger, ahead of World Food Day, the agency said the current crisis was down to a “confluence of competing crises”, caused by climate shocks, conflict, and economic instability.
The number of hungry people around the world has shot up from 282 million to around 345 million since the beginning of 2022, and by mid-year, WFP had reached just over 111 million in need, aiming to reach a record 153 million by year’s end.”
The Hunger Index Report further stated that “South Asia, the region with the world’s highest hunger level, has the highest child stunting rate and by far the highest child wasting rate of any world region.6 India’s child wasting rate, at 19.3 percent, is the
highest of any country in the world and drives up the region’s average owing to India’s large population.”
According to the FAO’s State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2022 report, global hunger increased last year. It is estimated that 828 million people worldwide will be affected by hunger in 2021. This is due to “exacerbated disparities across and within countries as a result of an inequitable pattern of financial recovery among countries and unrecovered lost earnings among those most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic,” according to the report.
The GHI of Global Hunger Index score is based on four indicators: undernourishment, child wasting (the proportion of children under the age of five who are wasted, i.e. have low weight for their height, indicating acute undernutrition), child stunting (children under the age of five who have low height for their age, indicating chronic undernutrition), and child mortality (the mortality rate of children under the age of five).
