Oil India Limited under major ‘cyberattack’

Must Read

The Oil India Limited has come under a “major” cyberattack, compelling the oil giant to shut down its entire IT set-up across the country to contain the attack.

The attack came less than a week after reports emerged that hackers targeted the Power Grid facility near Ladakh for the past few months, including March this year. The reported “cyber attacks” near Ladakh were carried out by China-based hackers if reports are to be believed.

Confirming the development, OIL spokesperson Tridiv Hazarika said, “Based on the advice of the IT division, all computers have been immediately withdrawn from LAN connectivity, and internet connectivity has been disabled since yesterday. On April 11, we witnessed some malfunction in some computers located at OIL headquarters in Dibrugarh.”

“The online IT team identified it as a major cyberattack, detecting malware in the affected computers,” Hazarika said.

He said an advisory was issued immediately to disable connectivity of all computers to stop the spread of the attack and save the server from further damage.

“Though it is too early to declare the origin of attack and type of malware, the IT division has engaged a professional IT firm to restore the network, which may take at least 4 to 5 days and will be done sector-wise,” Hazarika said.

Hazarika said few email categories are active and can be accessed through a different network at home or mobile phone.

According to sources, OIL is also looking to file a complaint with a competent cyber authority. Recently, the world witnessed a spate of cyber attacks in Ukraine, days before it was invaded by Russia.
