Nayanmoni Saikia from Assam, one of the team members of Indian Women team who bagged gold medal in Lawn Bowl at Commonwealth Games, 2022 gets nominated for Arjuna Award.
Veteran table tennis player Achanta Sharath Kamal has been nominated for the coveted Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award by the selection committee led by Justice (ret.) AM Khanwilkar. After Manika Batra won it in 2020, Kamal, 40, is the second paddler to receive the greatest athletic honour.
The award has received at least 25 nominations from athletes.
Saikia won the gold medal in lawn balls at the CWG, which was held in Birmingham, in August.
In September, she was appointed as the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).
Nayanmoni has always had a strong enthusiasm for athletics, and she began her athletic career through weightlifting. However, because of her leg injury and declining ability, she decided to play lawn bowls because it was an injury-free sport.
She participated in the sport and frequently represented India and Assam. In individual and team competitions at the National Games in 2011 and 2015, she took home gold medals.
Additionally, she won the girls’ under-25 division gold medal at the 2012 Asian Lawn Bowls Championship.
